Let’s look at how we can use contractions when we are using the future tense. Remember that contractions are most common in speaking and informal writing.
Avoid using contractions when you are doing formal writing such as a business report, a contract, school paper, or essay.
1. We can make contractions with pronouns and “will”. We cannot make contractions with a person’s name and “will”.

- I’ll go after I finish.
- You’ll be happy after you finish.
- We’ll be ready in 5 minutes.
- She’ll work here next month.

- They’ll come together.
2. For negative sentences, “will not” can change to “won’t”.
- I won’t go.
- She won’t come to the party tomorrow.
- It won’t rain tomorrow morning.
- They won’t like it.
Remember that for negative sentences, we can use contractions in two different ways. They are both fine.
- She’ll not come to the party.
- She won’t come to the party.
- It’ll not be cold tomorrow.
- It won’t be cold tomorrow.
3. For sentences using “going to” or “going to be” then we can use the “be verb contractions that we studied in the present tense lesson. The “be verbs” in these sentences are in the present tense even though the sentence is talking about the future.
- She’s going to come at 9.
- She’s not going come at 9.
- She isn’t going to come at 9.
- They’re going to meet us there.
- We aren’t going to be late.
- I’m not going to wait forever.
It is helpful to look at many examples and practice making your own sentences when learning grammar.

- They’re going to get married next month.
- It’s going to rain tonight, so bring an umbrella.
- He’s going to be angry when he hears about this.
- We’re going to buy a new house as soon as we can afford it.
- I’m not going to forget this!
- She isn’t going to leave until later.
- He’s not going to be at the meeting.
- They aren’t going to decide until next week.
- We’re not going to go on vacation this summer.
- It isn’t going to be ready for another 45 minutes.

A) My sister is studying for her teacher’s license again.
B) I heard that the test is hard.
A) It is. My sister failed it last year. She’ll take it for the second time this year.
B) That must be stressful.
A) Definitely. She’ll be worried until it is over.
