Simple Present Tense: Negative Be Verbs

In the last lesson, we learned how to make simple sentences with the English verb “to be”. In this lesson, we will see how to make a negative sentence with the verb “to be”. If you know how to make positive sentences with “to be”, then this will be easy.

Use the word “not” after the “be verb” to make a sentence negative (-). “Be verb + not” acts like not equals sign (≠). That’s it!

  • I am a boy. I am not a girl.
  • She is tall. She is not short.
  • They are not hot. They are cold.
  • The dog is cute. It is not ugly.
  • Ben and Stacy are not doctors. They are nurses.
  • The car is not expensive.
